We are approaching warp speed in preparation for the race season. December is by far always the busiest time at Happy Trails. The training runs are getting much longer, 50+ miles, equipment is being checked and packing for food drops is in a frenzy. Because of the addition of the Yukon Quest to the racing equations, we are working hard to stay organized and ahead of the game. Martin is moonlighting as a butcher and is cutting meat and fat supplies for the dogs. No power tools come Jan 1. Magnus and Sean are packing everything he cuts. I have been getting Martin's personal food cooked and vacuumed packed before I leave to go to Louisiana for Christmas. So far the pasta, fresh Mat-valley peas, steak, Mongolian beef, poppyseed cake, potato sticks, smoked salmon (thanks Maria), liverwurst croissants (thanks Reto) and mixed nuts are ready to go!! Only a few items left to prepare. Martin plans to pack his Iditarod food drops soon, since he will be racing on the Quest when the Iditarod drops are due.
We are so lucky to have Sean and Magnus here as helpers. They are an integral part of the dog training as well as all the other kennel chores.
Sue Allen, our yearling driver from last year, has another batch of yearlings but will not be racing this year. She has rave reviews on the teenagers so far. We appreciate her dealing with this rowdy group.
We are SOOO happy to be having a more typical Alaskan winter, snow and mostly cold!!!!
