MUSHING ENTHUSIASTS in IOWA

Shelly Lewis presents Martin with a pair of autographed suspenders. Shelly provided the dogs for the "grand entry."
Marcia Claesson and Diana Danieleson visit with Martin in DesMoines. (Diana drove seven hours from Frazee, Minnesota to talk dogs.
Martin joined a group of interested doggie people in Iowa Monday night for an informal gathering. Folks there knew of his appearance at the Snow Conference since Martin had to borrow some local dogs to make an entry in an arena area before he gave a power point presentation. We were surely unaware of how many folks were interested in Iditarod and dog mushing in the Iowa area.

STATUE of LIBERTY

Being a relatively new citizen, Martin totally enjoyed his visit to Lady Liberty.

This is an Alaskan artist's rendition of Liberty, Alaskan style. On display at Alaska House.

We got home from NYC on Thursday. Sunday, Martin heads off to DesMoines, Iowa to give a keynote on The Spirit of Iditarod to the American Public Works Association Snow Conference. He'll be home again on Wednesday.

ALASKA HOUSE

After spending just a short time at Alaska House, Martin immediately dubbed the place the Alaska Embassy in New York City. After walking the streets of New York for days, we found Alaska House to be an oasis of calm in an overwhelmingly busy city.

The event Martin was invited to attend was a private gathering for New Yourk based travel media writers. Alaska House was the perfect venue for various groups, including the Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau, Alyeska Resort, the Alaska Railroad, Holland America, Winterlake Lodge, etc. to showcase tour destinations.

I was delighted to find on display the artwork of Alvin Amason, vibrant three dimensional representations of Alaskan animals that yell out their distinct personalities.
Carefully crafted pieces of Alaska Native Art are displayed throughout the building.

ACE of CAKES

Part of the event in NYC was to have the Ace of Cakes (Duff) make a cake representing Alaska. He and his crew took a trip to the state, gathered impressions and came up with the cake above. The cake will be featured during an episode of the his show. He brought in the Mt. McKinley and spent hours adding the decorations which included a dog team, native dancers, Hotel Captain Cook, the polar bear plunge, etc. Click on the photo to get a bigger view. I had never seen the show but evidently it is quite popular. Besides being quite a project, the cake itself tasted delicious.

BALTO IN CENTRAL PARK

We are in NYC for a promotional event and we found Balto in Central Park. Rohn drove from RPI for a visit and our primary mission was to find Balto. While Balto is tucked away in the southeast corner of the Park, you can see how much he has been loved. His shiny coat shows where kids and adults have climbed on him and petted him.

SLED DOG BREEDER

The Dirty Jobs episode featuring Happy Trails Kennel is scheduled to show again on

Saturday, April 18 at 9:00 pm and on Sunday, April 19 at 12:00 am

The note says ET/PT.

We hope you enjoyed the show if you already saw it. The entire episode was unscripted and was really a lot of fun. Mike Rowe is smart, personable and funny!!! We feel very fortunate to have had him visit.

SPRING, DIRTY JOBS

The moose are helping with a little spring cleaning by chewing the brush back away from our informational sign on Big Lake Road.

We hope you enjoyed the "Sled Dog Ranch" episode of Dirty Jobs. It aired on Sunday, April 12. Kathy was in Louisiana for Easter and was in the dark as far as internet connection goes. Yes, there still are homes without online access.

We enjoyed the episode and captured part of kennel life that folks rarely see - all the various cleanup chores. Some people have asked about the poop bucket seen in the show. It's a regular square bucket with a piece of runner plastic attached with a nut and bolt. You can customize the handle by length. Any sort of strong plastic would work. We are always working to make that particular chore more efficient.

SPRING in ALASKA

Celine and her 8 pups. 3 days old today.

Sister and her three pups~

Sister's 5 day old pups.

Learjet's 5 pups. BTW: We don't sell our puppies!

A sure sign of spring in Alaska is puppies being born and taking them on walks. We are excited this year to have so many puppies so soon. We try to plan pups for the spring so they get lots of attention and the climate is easy on the Moms. Celine, who finished the Quest but didn't go on Iditarod because of her pregnancy, had eight black pups, 3 girls and 5 boys. In our world, 8 pups is a lot!!!! She is a great Mom. On to the future, now.
