KENNEL NEWS
The Iditarod Trail Committee recently announced an additional $100,000 decrease in the race purse. ($300,000 reduction last year) The strapped economy is finally coming to Alaska. In the tough times, we certainly thank our current sponsors for hanging in there with us, most of which have been with us for over 10 years. Whenever possible, please support these businesses and thank the individuals that make our racing season possible. Our website has links to most of our sponsors and we know they would appreciate the business or a note of thanks.
The Christmas holiday season at Happy Trails equals an intensified level of dog training. Martin will be able to spend a few days with family in Louisiana this year. Then no breaks until April. He plans to race in the KUSKO 300 in mid January, Iditarod in March and the Kobuk 440 in April. Magnus and Sean will be taking teams to the Copper Basin 300 in early January and the Quest 300 in early February. Sue Allen will be running the yearlings to Nome during the Iditarod.
Martin has completed construction of an auxiliary building out in the dog lot. One side includes Maggie's treadmill and the other side is known as the FUN House. 64 built in dog boxes, long benches, a dirt floor, a source of heat, a microwave and a dehumidifier. The guys around here take turns spending the night with their group of dogs. The time promotes team building and they have a blast milling around. photos coming soon. The warm space is a great area for dogs to recuperate from long tiring runs or injuries as well. But mostly guys and dogs just have fun in there.
We hosted the Iditarod Rookies last Sunday. 23 eager mushers spent the day gathering info that will hopefully help get them to Nome.
Wishing you a peaceful and comforting holiday season~
